Turtle Back Zoo is quickly becoming the pride of Essex County, earning a reputation as one of the recreational and educational jewels of the region as well as one of New Jersey's prime zoological resources. Combining a park-like setting with amenities that cater to both visitor and animal comfort, Turtle Back Zoo is a destination that can truly be enjoyed by all. The facility is constantly being improved, with new habitats designed to accommodate the unique characteristics of each of the species in residence, while balancing visitor accessibility with animal privacy. And with new additions, new exhibits and new programs being added every day, the Turtle Back Zoo experience is constantly evolving.

Turtle Back houses a variety of animals, including birds of prey, bobcats, cougars, otters, penguins and wolves. The zoo also provides an animal nursery. An 1850 miniature train offers a scenic one-mile ride around the grounds. All zoo exhibits are outdoors. Picnicking is permitted; food is available.
