Salisbury Zoo, Salisbury, MD.
The Salisbury Zoo is proud to be an accredited member of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA). AZA is a professional association with over 200 member zoos and aquariums dedicated to the advancement of zoos and aquariums in the areas of conservation, education, science, and recreation. AZA members are at the top of the field in animal care, education, and conservation. But many people do not know about AZA or what being an AZA accredited facility means. Many people also do not recognize zoos and aquariums as a trusted voice for animals and wildlife conservation.
AZA wants to fix this. AZA decided to institute a National Awareness Campaign to promote AZA zoos and aquariums to the general public. The goal of the campaign is to promote awareness of AZA institutions as the experts in animal care, wildlife education, and conservation. AZA plans to accomplish this through a spokescritter and a unified animal conservation theme. With all AZA member institutions participating in the National Awareness Campaign, AZA is sure to get its name out there.
Aza
As part of the National Awareness Campaign, AZA is introducing its spokescritter, Aza. Aza has many interesting adaptations. He has “plantlers” on the top of his head that he can move, a long tail to help him swim, and long legs that he uses to run. Aza is a creature that spends time on land and in the water and is familiar with all types of animals. Aza will help to educate kids about animals, nature, and the role of zoos and aquariums in protecting animals and nature.
